What is a Coumarin?
Coumarin is an organic compound that occurs naturally in many plants, with the chemical formula C9H6O2. It is known for its sweet, fragrant aroma and is commonly used in perfumes, cosmetics, and food flavoring. Coumarin has anticoagulant properties and has been used in the treatment of blood clotting disorders as a prescription drug, though it is generally not used directly for this purpose in most modern medical treatments. Naturally, coumarin is found in various plants such as cinnamon, lavender, cassis, and cucumbers, with cinnamon being one of the most common sources. While consumption of coumarin in food or fragrance products is generally considered safe in small amounts, excessive intake may lead to liver damage and other adverse health effects, so caution is advised.
In addition to its pleasant scent, coumarin is believed to have antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, and it has been used in traditional remedies in various cultures.
