What is a Thiamine?
Thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1, chemical formula: C₁₂H₁₄N₄OS) is a water-soluble vitamin belonging to the B-complex group. It plays a crucial role in energy metabolism, particularly in the process of converting carbohydrates into energy. Thiamine supports essential enzymes that help in the conversion of carbohydrates into usable energy, and it is vital for the normal functioning of the nervous system, heart, and muscles. In the body, thiamine is absorbed through the intestines and used as its active form, thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), in the bloodstream.
Thiamine can be found abundantly in foods such as fish, meat, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and some vegetables. However, refined grains like white rice and bread tend to lose thiamine during processing, which is why fortified products are often used to ensure adequate intake. Since the body cannot synthesize thiamine, it must be consumed regularly through diet.
A deficiency in thiamine can lead to several health problems, with the most well-known being "beriberi," a disease that causes nerve damage and heart irregularities. Thiamine deficiency is also commonly seen in individuals with chronic alcohol dependence or those suffering from malnutrition. Overconsumption of thiamine is rarely problematic, but very high doses may lead to mild side effects.
