What is a Biotin?
Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin that functions as a coenzyme in metabolic processes. It is essential for the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids, and plays a key role in maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails. Biotin also supports fetal development and the proper functioning of the nervous system. It is produced by intestinal bacteria and can be obtained from foods such as liver, egg yolk, nuts, and legumes. Deficiency is rare but may cause symptoms like dermatitis, hair loss, depression, and fatigue.
It is worth noting that raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which binds to biotin and inhibits its absorption. Consuming large amounts of raw eggs may therefore increase the risk of biotin deficiency.
