What is a Pyridoxal?
Pyridoxal is one of the three natural forms of vitamin B₆, alongside pyridoxine and pyridoxamine. Among these, pyridoxal is particularly important in its active form, pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP), which functions as a crucial coenzyme in many enzymatic reactions, especially those involved in amino acid metabolism. PLP participates in transamination, decarboxylation, and other processes that convert amino acids and synthesize neurotransmitters, as well as in glucose metabolism. A deficiency in vitamin B₆ can lead to symptoms such as dermatitis, neurological issues, and anemia.
Pyridoxal is found in various foods, including meat, fish, bananas, and whole grains.
