What is a Pyridoxine?
Pyridoxine is one of the three natural forms of vitamin B₆, along with pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. It is a water-soluble vitamin and plays a vital role in the body after being converted into its active form, pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP). PLP serves as a coenzyme in many biochemical processes, including amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, and hemoglobin production. A deficiency in pyridoxine can lead to neurological symptoms, skin disorders, and anemia. Certain groups, such as pregnant individuals and those with alcohol dependence, are more prone to deficiency.
Pyridoxine is commonly found in foods such as meat, fish, nuts, bananas, legumes, and whole grains, and is generally easy to obtain through a well-balanced diet.
