What is a Amyl acetate (C₇H₁₄O₂)?
Amyl acetate (C₇H₁₄O₂) is an organic compound formed by the esterification of acetic acid and amyl alcohol. It is a colorless liquid with a characteristic sweet, fruity odor resembling bananas, hence its common name "banana oil."
Amyl acetate is widely used as a flavoring agent and industrial solvent. It is especially common in the production of lacquers, varnishes, inks, and paints due to its good solubility and relatively fast evaporation rate. In small amounts, it is also used in artificial flavorings for foods.
While it has relatively low toxicity, inhalation of high concentrations may cause headaches, dizziness, or nausea. Proper ventilation is necessary during use. It is also flammable, so care must be taken near open flames.
