What is a Copper chlorophyllin?
Copper chlorophyllin, also known as copper chlorophyll, is a semi-synthetic, water-soluble green pigment derived from natural chlorophyll. In this compound, the central magnesium ion of chlorophyll is replaced with a copper ion, which enhances its stability and resistance to light and acidic conditions. This makes it suitable for use in a wide variety of applications including food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. It is commonly used to color candies, beverages, sauces, and skincare products. Additionally, copper chlorophyllin is reported to have deodorizing and antioxidant properties, leading to its inclusion in dietary supplements and oral care products. In the European Union, it is approved as a food additive with the designation E141, and its use is regulated. In Japan, it is permitted under the Food Sanitation Law, and products containing it must be labeled as “Copper Chlorophyll” or “Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin.” Due to its natural origin and functional properties, it is gaining popularity in health-conscious markets as a safer alternative to synthetic dyes.
