What is a Rotating center?
A rotary center is an instrument that is attached to the tailstock of a lathe to hold a workpiece. The big difference from the fixed center is that the bearing is built in the main body. Fixed centers can cause unacceptable scratches on the workpiece due to friction with the workpiece due to rotation, limiting the workpieces and rotation speeds that can be used. On the other hand, in the case of a rotary center, stable holding is possible while interlocking with the workpiece, and it becomes possible to handle high-speed rotation machining.
Application of Rotating center
When machining with a lathe, if the workpiece is too long or the chucking part is too small, the workpiece may be deformed due to the rotation of the spindle or the machining load, and stable machining may not be possible. To solve these problems, the rotary center plays the role of supporting the workpiece from the opposite direction to the chuck. Since the rotating center has a built-in bearing in the main body, it can be held in conjunction with the spindle. On the other hand, there is a drawback that the diameter of the head part becomes large due to the bearing. When the tool approaches, it is necessary to pay sufficient attention to the interference with the rotation center.
