What is a Ink pot?
A marking gauge, known as a "sumitsubo" in Japanese, is a tool mainly used in construction and woodworking to draw straight lines or angles. It is a container used to hold ink, typically ink liquid called "sumi," which is used to create lines. Inside the sumitsubo, there is a small ribbon of ink that can be drawn out to mark straight lines or guide lines on the surface of materials. The marking gauge allows for precise measurement and placement, making it essential for precision tasks in construction, carpentry, and furniture making. By creating visual guide lines, it is especially useful for marking areas that are hard to reach or where measuring tools cannot be easily applied.
Application of Ink pot

The marking gauge is frequently used in woodworking, for example, to draw accurate straight lines on wood. It helps ensure precision during cutting and drilling tasks.
✅Furniture Making
When making furniture, the marking gauge is used to draw precise guide lines, ensuring that the dimensions of parts align perfectly for a precise assembly.
✅Construction Work
In construction, a marking gauge is used to draw baseline guidelines for tasks such as foundation work and wall installation, ensuring accuracy throughout the project.
✅Renovation Work
In renovation, the marking gauge is used to make precise markings when adapting older buildings to new designs, ensuring that lines and placements are accurate.
