What is a Refractometer?
A device that measures the refractive index of a sample. When the wavelength, temperature, and pressure of the light source are constant, the refractive index takes a value peculiar to the substance, so it is used for identification and purity test of the substance. In addition, the "Brix sugar content meter" used to measure the sugar content of fruit juices and beverages can also be regarded as a type of refractometer. The Brix saccharimeter takes advantage of the fact that the concentration of saccharides in the sample solution affects the index of refraction. When using a refractometer, the temperature and sample concentration affect it, so make precise sample adjustments under stable temperature conditions.
Application of Refractometer
The refractive index of a substance can be measured quantitatively. The refractive index varies depending on the type of substance, so it is a measure of purity. Therefore, some foods and pharmaceuticals have a refractive index in their quality standards to confirm their purity. Analysis by HPLC or GC is required to investigate the purity in more detail, but a refractometer is suitable for easy and quick measurement. The "Brix sugar content meter" that measures the sugar content of fruit juices and beverages can also be regarded as a type of refractometer. The Brix sugar content meter measures the refractive index by placing fruit juice or beverage on the measuring unit. Since the refractive index correlates with the concentration of sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose, etc.), the refractive index is converted to Brix sugar content (unit: ° Bx) and displayed.
