What is a Integrating sphere?
An integrating sphere is a spherical device that reflects light uniformly. The inside is coated with a light scattering material that boasts high reflectance such as titanium oxide, and the incident light is reflected multiple times in various directions. By repeatedly reflecting light in the integrating sphere, it is possible to extract spatially integrated uniform light. There are a wide variety of products, from small ones with a size of several tens of centimeters to large ones with a size of several meters, and they are widely used for quality evaluation of lasers and light sources and as experimental equipment for research institutes.
Application of Integrating sphere
The integrating sphere can be used to extract light uniformly or to emit light uniformly. For example, light homogenized by an integrating sphere is suitable for detecting the intensity of a light source. Also, when measuring reflectance and transmittance, it is possible to detect reflection and transmission due to diffusion in addition to directly irradiated light. It can also be used as a light source that emits light uniformed by an integrating sphere. It is possible to create a light source with constant intensity by repeating reflection inside the sphere.
