What is a SIC diode?
A SIC diode is one of the basic elements of a compound semiconductor composed of silicon (Si) and carbon (C). SIC has about 10 times the dielectric breakdown strength and about 3 times the bandgap of Si (silicon), making it possible to create smaller electric circuit elements with higher withstand voltages. Taking advantage of this characteristic, power semiconductors using SIC are being developed. SIC diodes are a typical example of SIC power semiconductors. They are manufactured as discrete (single unit) products, and they are incorporated into modules and used in inverters, converters, IGBTs, etc. In particular, the SIC Schottky Barrier Diode is a high-performance diode that has been attracting attention in recent years because it is possible to create a small, high-voltage, high-efficiency switching device while reducing the forward voltage.
