What is a Ignition coil?
Ignition coils are critical components in a car's ignition system, enabling the engine to operate smoothly. To achieve efficient combustion, the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder must be ignited by a spark plug. The ignition coil generates the high voltage required to create this spark.
A car battery typically provides a voltage of around 12 volts, but the spark plug requires tens of thousands of volts to function. The ignition coil acts like a transformer, converting the low voltage into high voltage. This transformation process occurs through the coil's internal primary and secondary windings.
The main types of ignition coils include:
✅Single Coil Type: An older design where one coil is shared among multiple cylinders.
✅Coil-On-Plug (COP) Type: A modern design with a dedicated coil for each cylinder, providing higher efficiency.
✅Distributor Type: Uses a single coil and a distributor to send voltage to each cylinder.
In modern engines, the COP type is commonly used for its efficiency and reliability. If an ignition coil fails, issues like engine misfires, increased vibrations, or poor fuel efficiency can occur. Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial to ensure proper functioning.
