What is a Supercharger?

A supercharger is a mechanical device used to boost engine performance by compressing and supplying more air to the engine. This allows the engine to intake more oxygen, which improves combustion efficiency and increases the engine's output (horsepower) and torque. Superchargers are similar to turbochargers, but the key difference is that a supercharger is driven directly by the engine's crankshaft, while a turbocharger is powered by exhaust gases.

There are three main types of superchargers:
✅Roots-type supercharger
This type uses two intermeshing rotors to compress air. It provides high compression efficiency and quick response, delivering substantial power even at low engine speeds.
✅Centrifugal supercharger
In this type, a rotating impeller (fan) pushes the air outward, compressing it. It excels at high engine speeds, making it particularly effective at high RPMs.
✅Screw-type supercharger
This uses interlocking screw-like rotors to compress and expel air smoothly. It is typically used in large-displacement engines, offering smooth airflow and reliable performance.

The advantage of a supercharger is that it provides immediate power at any engine speed. Unlike a turbocharger, there is no lag, and the engine output increases instantly when the accelerator is pressed. Additionally, it enhances the engine's torque over a wide range, improving acceleration performance. However, because the supercharger is driven directly by the engine's crankshaft, it can increase the engine's load, potentially affecting fuel efficiency.
