What is a Friction stir welding?
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding process that joins metals by using a rotating tool to generate frictional heat. Invented in 1991 by Dr. Wayne Thomas in the UK, this technique is primarily used to join metals like aluminum, copper, and stainless steel. The tool rotates and is pressed against the metal surfaces to be joined, generating heat through friction. This heat softens the metal without melting it, allowing the tool to stir and mix the material at the joint, creating a strong, high-quality bond.
Friction stir welding has many advantages over traditional welding methods. It does not involve melting the material, which reduces heat distortion, and minimizes defects like porosity and cracks. Additionally, it creates a very uniform bond with excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and strength.
